We need to organize every commercial district in the State
of California and beyond. This is not an idle dream --
it is something we must do. And we must begin that work
now.
There is also a tremendous need for progressive firms to
promote legislation, both locally and statewide, that will
dramatically reduce greenhouse gas emissions, preserve natural
resources, and help provide the infrastructure for a new
economy where wealth is created by innovation and sustainable
commerce.
What
is a Carbon Footprint? Our everyday activities (like driving
to the market or watching TV) contribute to Global Warming.
How? When we use fuel, we release greenhouse gases (which
trap the sun’s energy and raise the temperature of
our planet) into the atmosphere.
Most of the gas we release
is carbon dioxide, so we call the measure of our impact
our Carbon Footprint. It’s important to know how
much we’re putting out there now (and how), so that
we can figure out how to put out less.
Our Carbon Footprint is our personal
addition to the problem. And it’s what we can change
to help.
How is it Calculated?
The U.S. Department of Energy has published
how many pounds of carbon are emitted when we participate
in each type of activity (like using electricity, heating
our homes, driving, and flying).
This worksheet uses estimates and only
scratches the surface.
